Abstract

How was organised crime able to infiltrate our daily lives so thoroughly? In this article, Emma Tiggelaar examines the development of the so-called ‘shadow state’ and its effects on society. By interviewing care workers, looking at national economic and drugs-related policies, and applying political scientist Joseph Nye’s theory of soft, hard and smart power, the author investigates the dwindling legitimacy of the Dutch government.
