Abstract

Convinced that the unity of humanity is that of a biological species that we cannot extract from all the forms of non-human life which constitute much more than its "environment", Marguerite Yourcenar tries in her work to restore the lost porosity between the human world and the so-called animal species. In this process, she creates a kind of “ethical tracing” going back from the finished animal product to its living origin, which opposes the almost exclusively utilitarian and anthropocentric motives of the commercial traceability.

  • May Chehab, University of Cyprus

    May Chehab is Professor of French and Comparative Literature at the University of Cyprus. She has been a Research Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of Cergy-Pontoise, a Visiting Fellow at the University of Princeton and Jean Monnet Professor for History of European Integration. Her publications include monographies (Saint-John Perse, neveu de Nietzsche, Paris, Honoré Champion, 2009), edited or coedited collective volumes (Auto/biographie : prémonitions, rêves, cauchemars, with Beatrice Barbalato, Presses Universitaires de Louvain, 2021; Le(s) Style(s) de Marguerite Yourcenar, siey, Clermont-Ferrand, 2015; AutoBioPhagies in collaboration with A. Lampropoulos with the participation of Philippe Lejeune, Peter Lang, 2011), and about a hundred articles and dictionary entries on today’s Antiquity, new Autobiography, interaction between Science, Philosophy and Literature, and European Studies.
