Educational bilingualism and literary mediation at book fairs: the case of children’s literature in Breton

Abstract

This article addresses the question of mediation concerning youth literature in Breton during literary events, in a context of school bilingualism. The presented study is based on a field survey conducted between 2018 and 2019 in Brittany, during seven youth book festivals. Reflecting on the constituent elements of these events – discovery of books under the aegis of pleasure and free choice, meetings with authors, families’ shared reading experiences – it appears that fundamental differences exist between Francophone and British-speaking youth literatures, particularly regarding the purpose of mediation actions in the context of salons.

    Eve Rouxel is a PhD-student in sociology at the University of Western Brittany within the Breton and Celtic Research Center of Brest. She is preparing a thesis on leisurely reading in Breton by children and adolescents, applying a dual socioliterary and sociolinguistic approach.
