Blank en Frank (1971) beschrijven een alternatieveprocedure voor de gangbare imitatietoetsen. Zijgaan er van uit dat de beschikbaarheid van syntaktische strukturen op zich van weinig belang is: 'Ifa child has a particular language structure, it is important to determine whether he uses it freely andappropriately in relevant circumstances. If he doesnot, then the structure, though potentially available,may not serving as an adaptive tooi to help the childorganize his thinking' (Blank and Solomon, 1969).In de meeste taaltoetsen worden variaties in deproduktie door het kind onder invloed van allerleipsychologische faktoren (intelligentie, situationelevariabelen e.d.) als relatief onbelangrijk beschouwd.Blank en Frank zeggen hierover: 'Yet these variablesmay have if not linguistic importance cognitiveimportance since they are likely to reflect the availability and appropriateness of the child's linguisticskills in coping with meaningfull situations' (Blankand Frank, 1971).
